The MP40 (Maschinenpistole 40) is a German submachine gun featured in all of the games in the Sniper Elite series, including its Zombie spin-offs. The gun is used by the German soldiers and can be picked up near their dead bodies. It is one of the two secondary weapons in the original Sniper Elite.
In Sniper Elite III: Afrika, the MP40 is also seen in the hands of Italian soldiers and officers.
Overview[]
Created for vehicle crews, the MP38/40 would be used commonly by Squad leaders and officers in the field due to its compactness and firepower, incorporating lessons from 1940 and 1942. It would also be used by assault teams in urban combat.
In-game the MP40 has decent accuracy and range, better damage than some submachine guns, plus the added bonus of having plentiful ammunition available.
Sniper Elite[]
The MP40 is one of the two SMGs in the game, together with the PPSh-41. It is carried by German soldiers and is a more accurate weapon. In Mission 03: Extract the Agent, the missing agent is using a captured MP40 in self-defense while escaping the French cathedral.
Sniper Elite V2[]
"The German MP40 lacks the accuracy of the Thompson, however it makes up for this with a higher rate of fire and more plentiful ammunition when behind enemy lines."
The MP40 is seen used by German soldiers throughout the whole game. It lacks accuracy but is a good weapon to have due to the abundant supply of ammunition, as it is carried by a large number of enemies.
Zombie Army Trilogy[]
The MP40 behaves exactly like in Sniper Elite V2, being used both by the Survivor Brigade and Zombies.
Sniper Elite III: Afrika[]

The MP40 is used both by German and Italian forces, especially by the officers. It is a competent weapon, being more powerful and accurate than the Sten and having a greater range than the Thompson.
Sniper Elite 4: Italia[]
"The "Maschinenpistole 40" was developed in Nazi Germany as a simplification of the MP 38 and saw heavy usage by infantry and paratroopers. Between 1940 and 1945 more than 1 million units were made, and it saw wide usage during WWII on both the Western and Eastern fronts."
The MP40 is the most common submachine gun in the game, being carried by many German soldiers. The stock always appears folded. The MP40 appears in the hands of German Infantry and Engineers, and by special units such as Spotters, Faust Troopers and Radio Operators. It can be unlocked for 3 rank tokens.

The MP40 is designated as the Machine Pist.1940 in Sniper Elite 5, and is used by the German Infantry.
Trivia[]
- Italian soldiers in Sniper Elite 3 use German MP40s. This is inaccurate but since they are working on Project Seuche, it is possible the Germans shared equipment.
